The professional world is always looking for someone who is a "team-player" or "collaborates well with their peers" which is something that the students do not usually learn in the classroom. Athletics is one of the best ways for a student to develop because it puts them in a situation where they are surrounded by their peers doing an activity that they enjoy. Sports also gives students pride in what they do or pride in their school.
There are some negative issues when it comes to sports which is mostly time management. A big complaint from teachers is that students go to school then to practice and don't have time to do their schoolwork. I don't see this as a problem but as an opportunity to teach students time management which will be helpful in their lives after school.
Ever since high school I wanted to be a track and field coach with throwing as my specialty. It is something that I loved since the first time I picked up a shot-put. Throwing is based on physics and as a science teacher I can relate throwing to science and give the students a physics lesson without them even knowing. I see myself as being a positive role model for students and I can teach the students how to be a successful high school student-athlete as well as a potential college student-athlete.
